The Tachyphonus cristatus (scientific name) or flame-crested tanager is found in tropical moist lowland forests and dry shrublands of South America, from Bolivia and Brazil to French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela. 5.9 inches in length, the overall plumage is glossy black, excepting the yellow-orange coloured crest it has on its head, which looks like fire. The chin and throat are also yellow-red in colour, and the under-wing coverts are white. Omnivorous in nature, its diet consists of insects, invertebrates, fruits, seeds and berries depending on the region. An average clutch-size has 2 eggs. Almost no other information is available on the incubation period and breeding pattern. Its IUCN listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
