Flaming Candle See-Saw (Funky Physics Experiments)

You will need:

  1. 2 tall glasses (of the same
    height)
  2. A long needle
  3. Ruler
  4. Thin long candle
  5. Knife or scissors
  6. Pliers
  7. Matchstick
  8. Newspaper or any sheet
    of paper

Create a beautiful flaming see-saw with this simple trick. All you have to do is apply Newton’s laws to make magic.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Even though this trick looks like a lot of fun, be careful and take the help of an adult.
  2. Line up the upside down glasses on a sheet of paper so that the wax may not drip on your table and dirty it.
  3. With the help of a knife or scissors cut a bit of the wax off the base of the candle so that you may have a wick on both ends.
  4. With your ruler, measure the candle and find a midpoint. Mark it.
  5. Now hold a needle (with the help of pliers) and heat it a bit on an open flame so that it may pass through the midpoint of the candle easily.
  6. Make sure you have enough of the needle protruding out on both sides to balance it on the glasses.
  7. Light up both sides of the candle and watch it.

RESULT

Each drop of wax that falls (from the side of the candle closer to the paper) creates an action which has an equal and opposite reaction, of moving the see-saw upwards.
