Friends Are Our True Well-wishers

I so glad that I have a lot of friends. I am even more glad that most of them live in the same town as I do. I see them almost every day. I just cannot think what people do without friends. Children, like me, need friends to play with. It is not nearly so much fun doing things like going on bike rides by yourself. You need someone to share things with to make them more enjoyable.
Adults also need friends. My elder sister Mary was very miserable when her best friend, Jane, moved to another town recently. For several weeks she hardly even went out. She loves going to the cinema, but after Jane went away, she did not have anyone to go with. Fortunately, Mary has now met a new friend at work. Now she has someone to go out with her. It is important to have a friend to talk things over with, whether this is a sad or happy subject. If something happy has happened to you, it is great to have someone to celebrate your good news with. On the other hand, it is equally important to have someone to sympathize with you if you have just had sad experience.
My grandmother says that one of the sad things about growing older is that some of your friends die. She says that this makes you appreciate the one you have left all the more. I only have to look at my grandmother to realize the importance of friendship. She still sees her friend Tracy every day and they started school together. They have both been widows for several years, but, with each other they are never lonely. My best friend Maggie and I started school together. I hope that we will still be friends when we are old as my grandmother.
