Conservation status : Near Threatened

Living near the bottom of outer continental shelf and upper continental slope at depths of up to 1,200 metres is the frilled shark. It is dark brown or grey, measures 2 metres long and has an eel-like body with six pairs of frilly gill slits. It bends its body and lunges forward like a snake to capture its prey, mainly cephalopods, bony fish and other sharks.
