Frog’s Bit

Frog's-Bit

Common name : European Frog-bit

Scientific name : Hydrocharismorsus-ranae

Family : Hydrocharitaceae

Native land : Europe and parts of Asia and Africa

European frog-bit is an annual herbaceous free-floating aquatic plant. Frog-bit is fast growing and spreads rapidly by stolons. It has no roots attached to the bed of the water body, but in situations where the vegetation is dense enough, the leaves may become emergent. By mid-summer, thick mats of interlocking plants can cover the surface of the water. European frogbit greatly resembles miniature water lilies. It is considered a pest in various regions, as it colonises waterways and forms dense masses of vegetation on the surface, threatening native biodiversity.
