Frost Flowers

A Frost Flower is created on autumn or early winter mornings when ice, in extremely thin layers, is pushed out from the stems of plants. At freezing point, the sap in the stem of plants will expand forming microscopically thin cracks. These give way under the pressure of the sap and split open. Water, which is continuously being drawn up the plant’s stem, travels up the plant’s stem and oozes slowly out of the split and freezes. When more water reaches, the cracks freeze too, pushing the previous slither of ice away from the stem. In this manner, the amazing ‘petals’ pictures are formed.
