You will need:
- Paper & pen
- Information about your family history
Create a family traits card and understand the science behind dominant genes, dormant genes and recessive family traits.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Make 7 columns on a sheet of paper.
- Write down the names of your grand- parents (on both sides), parents, siblings and your name in the first column.
- The headers for the remaining columns are hair colour, dimples, earlobes, tongue roll, and eye colour.
- Compare and understand how a trait you or your sibling possesses comes from one of your parents. Who carries the dominant gene?
RESULT
Understand genetics and family traits by
comparing traits you have compiled with your siblings, parents and even grand-parents. For example, your dad might have straight hair, but your mom has curly hair, and your siblings and you also have curly hair. This would mean that your mom has the dominant hair gene. However, if neither parent had curly hair, but your sibling has curly hair, it would mean that your sibling’s hair is a result of the dormant gene from either your mom’s or dad’s side, (like a grand-parent who had curly hair).
