Gentoo Penguin

The Pygoscelis papua (scientific name) or gentoo penguin is found only in the Antarctic Peninsula, and the islands surrounding the Antarctic. 30 inches in height, the gentoo penguin has an orange bills, black colouring on the back and white colouring in the front. A unique identifying feature is the white strip, which resembles a bonnet, across the head. These birds are opportunistic feeders. Their diet is comprised of crustaceans, krill, squid and fish. Though they mostly forage for food in waters near the coast yet they are known to dive into deeper waters for fish and other food. Colonial breeders, these birds form long-lasting bonds. An average clutch-size has 2 eggs which are incubated for 34 days by both the parents. Its IUCN listing is NEAR THREATENED.
