Common name : German cockroach
Scientific name : Blatella germanica
Family : Blattellidae
Native to : South-East Asia
Interesting fact : This cockroach has been named ‘German cockroach’ because of the fact that it was initially mistakenly assumed to have originated in Europe. Hardly 1.6 cm in length, this tiny cockroach is tan to brownish in colour and has very often been mistaken for the Asian cockroach. However, unlike its Asian brethren this cockroach cannot fly. They are omnivorous scavengers who can eat pretty much anything ranging from meat scraps, sugars and fatty food to soaps and toothpastes. They are typically found in houses, hiding during the day in dark nooks and crevices. This cockroach develops from the eggs to an adult in a span of 50-60 days.
