You will need:
- Transparent cello tape
- Dark room
Do you know that even your ordinary transparent cello tapes can glow in the dark? Conduct this experiment and find out how and why.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Wait till it gets dark, or else draw the curtains in a room; switch off the lights and make it extremely dark.
- Wait for a few minutes till your eyes adjust to the darkness.
- Hold your cello tape and very quickly peel some off the reel.
RESULT
The cello tape you just peeled off will create some flashes of light as the tape unravels from the reel. This is a result of two materials separating or being pulled apart. In this case, it is the adhesive and the polyester tape. When it is pulled apart, the adhesive becomes positively charged and tape itself is negatively charged. While pulling the tape apart, you give the 2 charges energy, which can be seen as flashes when some of the negative and positive charges escape the tape and adhesive.
