Gomateshwara is a monolithic statue dedicated to the Jain god Bahubali. It is located in Karnataka, India. Gomateshwara was built in 983 AD.
Why it is special: 57 feet in height, the statue is one of the largest freestanding structures in the world. Commissioned by a minister in the Ganga Dynasty, this statue was considered the first of the Seven Wonders of India in 2007. Every 12 years, a festival known as ‘Mahamastakabhisheka’ attracts devotees from far and wide. During the festival, the statue of Gomateshwara is anointed with ghee, milk and saffron.
