Common name : Grass grub
Scientific name : Costelytra zealandica
Family : Scarabaeidae
Native to : New Zealand
Interesting fact : Grass grubs can be extremely damaging to agricultural crops and plants.
Up to 13 mm in length, the grass grub adult has a shiny outer covering. While the larvae tend to feed on the roots of plants, the adult feeds on the leaves of trees, shrubs and foliage of pasture crops. A female can typically lay 100 eggs in loose or wet soil. Once the larvae emerge out of their eggs, they borrow into the soil up to 250 mm into the earth.
