The Lamprotornis chalybaeus (scientific name) or greater blue-eared starling is native to Africa, from Senegal to Central Africa, and down to the North of South Africa. They are seasonal migratory birds. Not more than 8 inches in length, it has a lovely blue green glossy shine to its dark plumage, with a purple-blue belly and a patch around the ear. With the irises a stark yellow-orange colour, these birds are extremely gregarious and form big flocks. An average clutch-size is 3-5 eggs incubated in nests in tree-holes, for 13-14 days. Their diet is similar to other starlings. It includes seeds, berries and fruits, but is mostly comprised of invertebrates and insects. Its IUCN listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
