Miss Hailey arrived at Farmer Moffat’s house one morning with a small suitcase of clothes and a trunk full of books. She wore a dress with blue flowers but its hem was torn. Her straw hat was slightly tattered and her hairpins were falling out. “She is to teach the children,” said Mrs Moffat, “but they’ll never listen to her if she goes around looking such a mess!” “But what can we do?” said Mr Moffat. Mrs Moffat had to do something for her daughters Daisy and Lucy, for they were quite naughty and would make Miss Hailey miserable! She sat with Miss Hailey for breakfast and they had a nice long chat. Then Mrs Moffat took her to the market and she came back in a new pink dress, a straw hat with a red ribbon on and a new hairdo! When Daisy and Lucy saw her, they were so charmed that they never disobeyed her!
