About 12 species of hakes are known and they live close to the bottom at daytime and move towards the surface at night. They are thin blue-grey fish and have black mouths with sharp teeth. They grow 1 metre long and weigh 1-8 pounds. Adults feed on squid, whiting and mackerel while juveniles feed on crustaceans. Their lifespan is 14 years.
