Hatim Tai, on the third day of his journey to solve the puzzle, saw a wolf attacking a doe. He said to the wolf, “Do not kill this poor animal; it has young ones to feed.” The wolf replied, “If I do not kill him, what should I eat?” On hearing this, Hatim Tai took his knife and carved out a piece of flesh from his thigh and gave it to the wolf. The wolf, after it had satisfied its hunger, asked Hatim what he was doing in the desert. Hatim replied that he was in search of the man who had said, “What I once saw, I long for a second time.” The wolf thought for a while and said, “I do not know where this man is but I have heard travellers talk that such words are heard in the deserts of Hawaida.” The wolf then gave Hatim directions to the deserts of Hawaida and left.
