Hearing without Ears (61 Brilliant Biology Experiments)

You will need:

  1. Metal cake tin/pie pan
  2. Metal spoon
  3. Salt
  4. Ear muffs

Try this experiment to know all about vibrations and feeling the sound without actually hearing it.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Firstly put on some really good noise-blocking ear muffs.
  2. Next, turn the metal cake tin or pie pan upside down and put a thin layer of salt on it.
  3. Once the pie pan bottom is covered with salt, take your metal spoon and hit the pan with it.
  4. Continue hitting the pie pan lightly and observe the movements of the molecule of salt.

RESULT

The salt crystals should begin to move around and jump about. As each molecule bounces back and forth, it comes into contact with new neighbouring molecules, but with lesser energy. So even though we may not hear the banging because of the ear muffs, we can see it as a result of the salt molecules. Even if you touch the table on which the pie pan is placed, you will be able to feel the vibrations which travel through the pie pan and the table.
