Henry Walter Bates was born on 8th February 1825 in Leicester, England, and he died on 16th February 1892 (aged 67 years) in London. Henry Walter Bates was an English naturalist and explorer. He explored the Amazon Rainforests and the Amazon Basin along with his friend Alfred Wallace. They reached Para, Brazil to collect specimen to gather facts towards solving the problem of the ‘origin of species’ as stated by them in a letter. Their aim was to send the specimen back home where an agent would sell them. He collected about 14,712 species of insects of which at least 8,000 were unknown. He was the first person to give the scientific account of mimicry in animals which is named after him and called Batesian mimicry.
