Hiram Bingham III was born on 19th November 1875 in Honolulu, Hawaii, and he died on 6th June 1956 (aged 81 years) in Washington DC, USA. An explorer, academic and politician, Hiram made the existence of the Inca citadel in Macchu Pichhu known to the public in 1911. He was also one of the pioneers of teaching and research on Latin American history in the US. He published an account of his trip across South America entitled ‘Lost city of the Incas’ which was a best-seller. He organized the Yale Peruvian Expedition with the aim to find the last Inca capital. Macchu Picchu is a major world attraction and Hiram is considered the man to have brought it fame.
