Hirsi and Kabaalaf

Once upon a time, there were two thieves, Hirsi and Kabaalaf. One day, they planned a con (dishonest) trick. They saw a woman carrying a pot of butter on her head and pulling a ram with a rope. Hirsi went ahead of her pretending to be blind. He began pleading, “Is there anyone here who can help me go where I want to go?” The woman felt pity for the poor blind man and she went up to him. She said, “I feel really sorry for you. You are blind and I want to help you. But both my hands are full, one with the rope and ram, and the other with the pot of butter.” The thief insisted that she could help her. He said, “Hand over the rope to me and I will pull the ram for you. Then, you can take my stick in that hand and guide me where I want to go.” The woman thought it to be a good idea. So, she gave him her rope and took his stick.

The Repentance

Now, Kabaalaf took the rope off the ram’s neck and took it. Thereupon Hirsi said, “Oh, the rope is light now. What happened?” The woman turned around and saw that her ram had gone. Hirsi said, “I didn’t feel anything. Just then, the rope suddenly became very light.” “What shall we do now?” the woman said. Hirsi suggested her to go back and look for the ram while he looked after her pot of butter. The woman agreed and went in search for the ram, and Hirsi ran off with the butter. Then, Hirsi and Kabaalaf met behind the tree and ate the ram and butter. After a few days, they fell severely ill. When people asked them what happened, they said that they did an evil thing. They stole a poor woman’s pot of butter and a ram. Maybe she had hungry children waiting for her. They felt sorry for their act.
