Hold Your Stomach

Hold-Your-Stomach

There is a custom in Japan where children are asked to Hold their Stomachs or Belly Buttons when during a storm.

Do you know: According to Japanese customs, the god of Thunder and Storms is said to sleep in the Belly Buttons of children.

This custom evolved from stories where Raijin, the god of Thunder, was said to strike lightning into the bellies of little children so as to wake his sleeping companion Raijuu. The reason behind this custom and folklore was to get children to cover their midsections so that they might not catch a cold in the stormy cold weather.
