Hot Springs (61 Near Nature Experiments)

You will need:

  1. 4 clear glasses
  2. Red and blue food
    colour
  3. 2 square pieces of card
    paper
  4. Hot water (2 glasses)
  5. Cold water (2 glasses)

Understand the science behind hot springs by conducting a simple experiment using hot and cold water.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. This experiment can get messy, so perform it outdoors.
  2. Firstly, fill a glass with cold water right till the brim. Add a few drops of blue food colour to it.
  3. In the second glass, fill hot water till the brim. Ask an adult to help so that you may not burn your hands. Add a few drops of red food colour to it.
  4. Take the hot water glass and carefully place a square piece of card paper on it.
  5. Ask the adult to perform this bit. Holding the card paper, quickly flip the hot water till the glass is inverted.
  6. The card paper should hold its place. Gently place the inverted hot water glass along with the card paper onto the glass of cold water.
  7. Carefully remove the card paper, without disturbing the glasses. What do you see?
  8. Now repeat the entire experiment again. But this time, replace the 2 glasses. The glass of cold water will be inverted and, the glass of hot water stays at the bottom.

RESULT

When the glass filled with the hot water is above the cold water, not much mixing will happen. But when the glass of cold water is above, the blue and red colours will mix quickly. The molecules of cold water are denser and sink to the bottom; whereas the molecules of hot water move faster and are spread apart, making them move upwards.
