Hovercraft CD (Funky Physics Experiments)

You will need:

  1. An old CD
  2. A pop-top cap of any
    sports bottle or
    dishwashing soap bottle
  3. A 9″ balloon
  4. Feviquick or any other
    instant glue

Do you want to see how a hovercraft works? Well, you can create your very own hovercraft at home with just a few simple objects.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Make one or two holes in the pop-top cap with a pin. Make sure that it is closed.
  2. Stick with feviquick the pop-top cap onto the CD, exactly over the centre hole of the CD. There should be no space between the cap and the CD.
  3. Take a balloon and inflate it. Once inflated, do not tie the balloon; just twist it several times.
  4. Now take the balloon and with the help of a friend fit the neck of the balloon over the closed pop-up portion of the cap.
  5. When you are ready, release the balloon.

RESULT

For a hovercraft to function, air is required to lift the vehicle off the ground. The CD in this case is no exception. Air pressure from the balloon lifts the CD as it is released, making the CD hover over the surface.
