Bain Hugh Clapperton was born on 18th May 1788 in Annan, Scotland, United Kingdom, and he died on 13th April 1827 (aged 39 years) in Sokoto, Nigeria. A Scottish naval officer, Hugh was the first European who went to West Africa giving the first account of the area now known as northern Nigeria. He also became the first European to see Lake Chad and to enter a Sudanese province. He travelled to Kano, Katsina, Sokoto and Zaria, now all in Nigeria.

Do you know: Hugh Clapperton reached Sokoto intending to continue but due to the breaking out of a war he was not allowed to leave. He was detained and after many months of suffering from malaria, dysentery and depression he died there.
