Ice Cube On A String (Creative Chemistry Experiments)

You will need:

  1. Thin wire
  2. Ice cubes
  3. 2 pencils

Create the illusion of floating ice cubes sticking to wires without actually melting the ice cubes with heat.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Take a length of the thin wire and wrap its end around the pencils, so as to give you a way to hold the wire without hurting yourself.
  2. Take an ice cube and gently start applying force on the ice cube with the wire, pulling both ends of the wire down on the ice.
  3. It will help to cut the ice quickly if you move the wire in a sawing motion.
  4. You could just cut through a little or apply pressure till the wire goes half way through.

RESULT

The wire goes through the ice and the ice reforms over the wire. As a result of relegation, it not only melts the ice, but also refreezes it because of the pressure applied to it.
