As years passed by, Eli became old and would prefer to rest in his room at night. Samuel had taken the responsibility to guard the golden chest and he did that properly. One night while he was deep asleep, he heard someone calling his name. He thought it might be Eli and rushed to his room and asked him the reason why he had called him. Samuel was surprised to know that Eli didn’t call him. This happened two more times, and this time he knew he wasn’t dreaming. He rushed into Eli’s room and told him the same. The experienced Eli knew who was calling him. He said, “Next time you hear your name called out, say to the Lord I am listening to you.” He did the same thing when he heard the sound. God told him that Eli’s sons were not honest as they robbed the gifts that were presented to Him. So, they would not be serving as priests any more. Samuel told Eli about it, which disappointed him.
