August the fifteenth is celebrated as the Independence Day of India. Since 1947, India has been celebrating and would continue to celebrate this day every year. This reminds us of India’s freedom from the foreign rule. On this day, the British left India and handed over the reins of the government to the national government of free India. This day marks the triumphs of those Indian nationalists and patriots who struggled hard and sacrificed their lives for the freedom of their motherland. This year also, the Independence Day was celebrated in my town. Early in the morning, there were processions and prabhat pheries people sang in that calm atmosphere of the dawn. These songs were reminiscent of the brave deeds of Indian heroes. People were in a cheerful mood. Then at 8 a.m. the national flag was hoisted at the committee grounds. People came to witness the ceremony. The flag was unfurled by a local dignitary who is the health Minister in the Punjab government. After hoisting the flag, the visiting dignitary gave a powerful speech he described the progress of Indian planning during the last sixty-five years. His speech was to the point and inspiring. He also paid glowing tributes to the Indian martyrs. At last, the National Anthem was played. The people dispersed after the National Anthem.
