(Samudrika Shastra)
Once upon a time Lord Vishnu was lying on the bed of ‘Shesh’ (name of the cobra) accompanied by goddess Laxmi. The bed of Shesh was floating on the centre of ‘Kshir sagar’ (ocean of milk). When Laxmi and Vishnu were delved into the ‘Yog Nidra’ (deep meditative sleep), the ‘Kshir Sagar’ (name of the methodological ocean) saw all the body of the couple and assumed their body feature as auspicious thereafter a practice of comparing physical character of human was developed, which is called Samudrika Shastra. Ocean was of the view that Laxmi-Vishnu are the supreme god couple. If the characters existed in their body, are found in any human, the said human will also be equipped with spiritual and auspicious traits. If all the physical characters of Laxmi and Vishu are found in any person, he or she will be incarnation of Laxmi-Narayan or his incarnated man. On the basis of this, Samudrika Shastra or Indian Physiognomy was originated. Thereafter, sage Narad, Lakshak, Varah, Mandvya and Kartikeya etc. succeeding saints described, updated and developed this art, but the form of this art, tendered by these sages, was beyond of the understanding of succeeding humans and reached at the verge of vanishing stage. Its absolute and authentic form was dismantled. During the reign of Raja Bhoj and Sumant this disparate and dismantled knowledge was again consolidated, amalgamated and updated. Since then Samudrika Shastra is easily available and considered auspicious.
Spiritualists believe that the body is not the result of composition of physical elements; the soul, existed in the body, is omnipotent and beyond of birth and death. It is immortal and eternal. As man removes his old clothes and puts on new ones, the soul changes her body from time to time. Soulless body is dead and useless but the soul is not harmed on the death of body.
It means that the soul existed in the body is the eternal part of Brahm and the same, having situated in trivirtual ‘Maya’, attracts five senses along with mind. There are mortal and immortal elements in this world, out of which human body is mortal and the soul is immortal and spiritual.
Everyone uses Physiognomy in his daily life spontaneously for gathering information about any men, things, plants, natural events and situation; but he does not know that a science is regulating his instinct. In a nutshell, we can conclude that Samudrika Shastra, body language or Physiognomy is a practising science in the daily life of living beings.
