Invisible Glass (Funky Physics Experiments)

You will need:

  1. Oil (preferably baby oil)
  2. Water
  3. 2 large transparent glass
    bowls or beakers
  4. 2 measuring rods or any
    other small clear glass
    objects

Try this science experiment to make glass disappear and befool everyone with simple physics.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Take 2 large transparent glass bowls or beakers.
  2. Fill one with water and the other with baby oil or vegetable oil.
  3. Now place your measuring rods inside each beaker.
  4. You will be able to see the rod in the beaker filled with water.
  5. But, what happens to the rod immersed in the beaker filled with oil?

RESULT

The beaker filled with oil makes the rod magically disappear!! This happens because of reflections and refractions that occur due to images being seen by us as light rays. These light rays create refraction when they encounter any object which slows their speed down. In this case, it is the glass and water (which has a different refraction index as compared to glass). But when we pour the oil into the glass, the oil and the glass have nearly the same refraction index. As a result, the speed of the light rays does not change, and the object appears invisible.
