Iron In Your Cereal (Creative Chemistry Experiments)

You will need:

q 2-3 cups of iron-fortified
breakfast cereal
q Strong magnet
q Zip lock plastic bag
q Water

Next time you are about to eat your favourite
breakfast cereal, why not test it, whether it is
actually fortified with iron (as the box says), or not?

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Pour the cereal into a plastic bag which can be sealed so that, when you add water to it, it may not leak.
  2. Add a lot of water to the cereal, till it completely covers the cereal and then some more.
  3. Let the cereal and water sit for an hour, till the cereal softens and blends into the water.
  4. Mix the cereal well with the water.
    Swirl it around a bit.
  5. Next, take a strong magnet, and place it on the underside of your plastic bag, and swirl the bag around, holding the magnet tightly in place.
  6. Flip the bag over gently so that the magnet may be facing upwards.

RESULT

The small iron pieces would pull out of the cereal and water mixture and get attracted to the magnet. You should be able to see them clearly. Not removing the magnet from the bag move it around. The iron filings will follow the magnet!
