Jaanipäev was celebrated a long time before Christianity reached Estonia. Hence, many of the customs and rituals are still pagan. This day marks a change in the farming year. A large bonfire is lit on this day and as a sign of good luck, people jump over it. This ritual is also meant to guarantee prosperity for the new year and keep away mischievous spirits.
