Jacuzzi is a ‘brine pool’, thousands of feet below the surface of the ocean under the Gulf of Mexico. The water is so salty and low in oxygen that when fish and crabs fall in, they die and get pickled. The pool looks fascinating with a jewel-like rim and has warm water; hence the name Jacuzzi. The water is five times saltier and contains toxic chemicals like methane gas and hydrogen sulphide. The only organisms that can withstand such noxious conditions are bacteria, tube worms and shrimp. Studying the kinds of organisms that thrive in this habitat, can enlighten scientists about life on other planets.
