It is a perennial shrub with long arching stems up to 9 feet in length. Upright stems have red gland tipped hair and small spines. The leaves are alternate, palmately compound, with 3 heart-shaped serrated leaflets. Small greenish flowers with white petals and reddish hair occur in late spring to early summer. The very edible raspberry-like fruit has bright red to orange-red colour, multiple drupes, and ripens in mid summer. Wineberries are juicy and very sour. They are a good source of vitamin C, antioxidants, minerals and fibre.
