Jatinga in Guwahati, India, faces a rare phenomenon of massive bird ‘suicides’ that happen every monsoon from September and October during dark foggy nights. Researchers say that the geomagnetic and electromagnetic fields of the surrounding hills make it difficult for migratory birds to fly past them. The birds arrive at Jatinga after traversing long distances. Their wings become heavy and they are unable to eat. They either fall dead or sit on the slopes of the hills. They fly from cold countries and naturally fly to the fire lit by the villagers. The villagers knock these birds with bamboos to trap them.
