Joao-Vaz-Corte-Real

Joao Vaz Corte-Real was born in 1420 in Faro, Portugal, and he died in 1496 in Portugal. Known to have explored Terra Navo do Bacalhau which is a part of North America specifically Newfoundland, Joao was granted a part of Terceira because of his discovery. Joao Vaz Corte-Real was also granted the island of Sao Jorge where he tried to promote its settlement but couldn’t achieve it. He and his wife, D Maria de Abarca were buried in the presbytery of the church of the Convent of Sao Francisco. His descendants did not live in the Capitania of Angra.

Do you know: The claim that he explored Terra Nova do Bacalhau originated from a book written by Gaspar Fructoses around 1570-80.
