John Cabot

John-Cabot

John Cabot was born 1450 in Genoa, Italy and he died  around 1498-1501. Sailing to Canada thinking it was Asia John Cabot claimed it for Henry VII of England. Also claimed for England the east coast of North America somewhere near Labrador or New foundland in the modern day Canada. The plan had been to sail west across the Atlantic Ocean to find a shorter route to Asia. He claimed to have found land full of silk and spices. Like other Italian explorers, including Columbus, John Cabot led an expedition on commission to another European nation. In 1496, John Cabot made a voyage from Bristol with one ship, but he was forced to turn back because of a shortage of food, inclement weather, and disputes with his crew.

Do you know: John Cabot was known as Giovanni Caboto before he moved to England.
