John Lloyd Stephens was born on 28th November 1805, New Jersey, United States, and he died on 13th October 1852 (aged 47 years) in New York, US. An American diplomat and writer, John is best known for the rediscovery of the Mayan civilization and the planning of the Panama railroad. He visited many archaeological sites in Eastern Europe and the Middle East and decided to locate the ruins in Central America.This discovery generated a lot of scholarly interest and public excitement. They made a second expedition to 44 different ancient sites. He was recommended for the post of Minister to the Netherlands but Martin Van Buren nominated Harmanus Bleecker.
