John Rae was born on 30th September 1813 in Orkney, Scotland, and he died on 22nd July 1893 (aged 80 years) in London, England. John Rae was a Scottish surgeon and Arctic explorer who is best known for the exploration of parts of Canada. He found the final portion of the Northwest Passage and the Rae Strait is named after him. John Rae was renowned for his skill as a hunter and excellent boat handling. He could live off the land and travel long distances for which he had great stamina. He made three journeys along the Arctic coast. During these expeditions they explored Mackenzie River, Victoria Island and the south coast of Victoria Island.
