Jose de Bustamante y Guerra was born on 1st April 1759 in Corvera de Toranzo, Spain and he died on 10th March 1825 (aged 66 years) in Madrid, Spain. Jose was a Spanish naval officer, explorer and politician. He along with Alessandro Malaspina proposed a scientific expedition after the voyages of James Cook. They sailed through all the Spanish Colonies and explored the little known areas such as New Zealand and Australia. They explored and mapped the present day Chile and Peru. They kept a diary and their work was published in 1868. Jose was promoted to naval Brigadier and appointed Governor of Paraguay and Montevideo.
