Juan Fernandez Firecrown

The Sephanoides fernandensis (scientific name) or juan fernandez firecrown is a non-migratory hummingbird found only in the forests, thickets and gardens of a small island called Isla Robinson Crusoe, Chile. These small birds are 10-12 inches in length. The male and the female look very different from each other. While the male is a cinnamon-brown colour, with dark wings, black beak and gold crown, the female has an iridescent blue-green plumage on the upperparts and white underparts with small green and black areas and an iridescent blue crown. While their diet consists mostly of nectar from flowers, they are also known to be insectivorous. An average clutch has 2 eggs, which are incubated for 16-18 days. Its IUCN listing is CRITICALLY ENDANGERED.
