The Rhynochetos jubatus (scientific name) or kagu is the only surviving member of its family, and is found only in dense mountainous forest of New Caledonia. 22 inches in length, this bird is bluish-grey in colour, has bright orange-red long legs, which help it to walk long distances. This is because the kagu is a flightless bird. It has a crest which is not visible unless erected and fanned. The primary wings are long and patterned, used mostly for display. The ‘nasal corns’ are unique to this bird only. It is carnivorous. A mono-gamous breeder, the kagu piles leaves up together to make a nest, on which a single egg is laid and incubated for 33-37 days. Its IUCN listing is ENDANGERED.
