Kamla’s death

While going to jail, only Kamla’s health worried him. From the Presidency jail, Jawaharlal was transferred to the Alipore Central Jail. He was not in good health in Alipore, his weight had gone down. In May, he was transferred to Dehradun. On the other side the health of Kamla also kept on deteriorating day by day. In July Kamla’s condition became critical and he rushed to Allahabad. Kamla’s condition troubled him very much and he had written this to Gandhiji. On the eleventh day after his release, he was to go back to prison, and this time he was taken to Naini. He was allowed to see Kamla for time to time but her condition required change. She was taken to the Bhowali Sanatorium and to be near her, Jawaharlal was transferred to Almora district jail. In May 1935 Kamla left Bhowali for Europe in search of future treatment. Kamla’s condition was critical in Europe and Jawaharlal was released five and a half months before his time on September 4 to join her in Germany. Jawaharlal found her condition changed very much for the worse. He still thought there was an even chance of a slow recovery. He spent his time nursing his wife, correcting the proofs of the Autobiography and meeting the odd visitors. Kamla was anxious to get back to Switzerland and Jawaharlal therefore moved her easily in 1936 to a clinic in Lausanne. Here it will either grow worse or better for next some days. Her condition fluctuated daily, and Jawaharlal clutched at momentary glimmers of recovery. But there was really no hope, and at 5.00 A.M. on 28th February she finally died.
After his wife’s death, Jawaharlal returned to India. He brought back Kamla’s ashes and immersed all—but the few he retained—at the Sangam in Allahabad. To get rid of his loneliness, after her death, Jawaharlal engaged himself wholly towards freedom struggle.
