Kandovan is a small village located in the Sahand Rural District in Iran. Known primarily for the stunning man-made cliff dwellings that are inhabited till date, Kandovan comprise many troglodyte homes that were excavated into volcanic rocks and tuffs. These dwellings are known locally as ‘Karaan’ and have a conical shape. Spread over 100 metres around the village, these Karaans were shaped over time due to water erosion.
