Kenneth A. Arnold was the first American to have sighted UFOs. He was an aviator and businessman and claimed to have seen nine unusual objects flying near Mount Rainier, Washington, on June 24, 1947. He described them as being pie pan-shaped, half-moon shaped, or simply saucer-like. He described their erratic motion as a saucer skipped across water, from which the term flying saucer was coined. Arnold became a minor celebrity. However in 1977, he spoke with displeasure, “Many of us dutifully reported these things but nobody has looked into the problem seriously. That is more fantastic than flying saucers.”
