Kitchen Scraps (61 Near Nature Experiments)

You will need:

  1. Glass bowl
  2. Knife
  3. Water
  4. Root end of spring
    onion (could also use
    root end of carrots,
    onions, garlic, etc.)

We have tried growing plants from seeds. Now,
try growing vegetables from the left-over scrap of old vegetables.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Ask an adult to help you chop off one inch off the spring onions, from the root end.
  2. Soak the spring onion roots in the bowl of water with only the bottom half of the spring onion being covered with water.
  3. Replace the water every day with fresh water, and make sure to keep the glasses on a windowsill with sunlight.

RESULT

In a few days, the spring onions will begin to grow fresh greens. This happens because spring onions like all vegetables are living things. They grow roots and stems even when they have been removed from the soil. Plants need water and sunlight to grow. The spring onions are easy to grow in water. But other vegetables like carrots and garlic will eventually need soil to grow. Carrots will begin to sprout green roots, after which they would need to be planted in the soil to grow.
