The Brachyramphus brevirostris (scientific name) or Kittlitz’s Murrelt is found only on the coasts of Alaska and Eastern Siberia. While it breeds in Alaska, it nests in parts of Siberia and Wrangel Island. A compact auk, with length not exceeding 9.8 inches, its plumage changes colour. In summer, when breeding season starts, it adopts greyish-brown plumage which is reflective of its breeding pattern. While in winters its plumage is black and white. The beak is extremely short. They feed in the waters near the shore on types of zooplankton, krill and larval fish. The clutch has only one egg, in nests above tree line on mountains. Incubation period is not known. Its IUCN listing is NEAR THREATENED.
