King Raivat married off his daughter Revati to Balarama having been influenced by the latter’s power and fame. Rukmini, daughter of King Bhismaka of Vidharbha, decided to accept Krishna as her husband. But crown-prince Rukmi fixed her marriage with King Shishupal of Chedi. Thereupon Rukmini sent word to Krishna that she had accepted him as her husband. So, he should save her or else she would die. On the fixed date Shishupal arrived with the marriage party at Kundinpur. He was accompanied by a large army.
Rukmini adorned with marriage clothes was on her way to Girija temple situated outside the city. Her attendants and guards were with her. Reaching the temple in the evening she prayed thus, “O Mother! Please grant me my wish.” As Rukmini came out of the temple and proceeded towards her chariot, Krishna pulled her onto his chariot and sped towards Dwarika. Shishupal with his army chased Krishna. Mid-way he had a terrible fight with Balarama who decimated his entire army. So, Shishupal had to return. Rukmi at the head of a large army was chasing Krishna who routed him.
Thereafter the marriage between Krishna and Rukmini was solemnised.
