Now let’s try something different. How about growing a layer of lacy salt crystals?
Things Required:
3 tablespoonfuls of table salt
Cup
Tall, slender, clear jar
Black construction paper
Scissors
Directions:
Pour 1/2 cup of water into the jar. Add the salt and stir. Cut a 1/2-inch strip from the construction paper. The height of the paper should be about one-half the height of the jar. Stand the paper strip against the inside of the jar. Place the jar in a visible place where it will be undisturbed. Allow the jar to sit for three to four weeks. Observe it daily.
This Is What Happens:
Lacy crystals may be seen at the top of the paper after several days. The more lace develops the longer the jar sits.
Science Behind It:
The salty water moves up the paper and onto the glass where it spreads out. The water evaporates leaving the microscopic bits of salt on the glass. This continues until the visible crystals of salt are seen. The water continues to evaporate at the edge, producing the layers of lacy crystals around the inside of the jar.
