Lakshmana at the head of a large army arrived at the battlefield in his chariot. When he saw two little hermit boys, he was greatly surprised as to how they could wreak havoc. He explained to them that they must let the horse go. But Luv and Kusha did not relent. Lakshmana did not want to measure arms with them. Children can’t be given harsh purnishment though they have committed a serious offence. As per Rama’s order, Lakshmana devised ways and means to capture them. But both the brothers were bent upon having battle. They wounded Lakshmana with their sharp arrows.
This angered Lakshmana who showered arrows upon the two boys. Lakshmana retaliated with a shot that made Kush fall unconscious. Luv was miserable. He dropped his bow, sat down near Kush and meditated on his preceptor Valmiki. Immediately, Kush revived and the battle began again. Finally, Luv made Lakshmana unconscious with a divine arrow given to him by the Sage.
The surprising news of Lakshmana’s unconsciousness was carried to Rama. He was so upset that he called Bharata.
