Las Bolas de Fuego or ‘Balls of fire’ is a traditional event that takes place annually in El Salvador.
Do you know: This festival was organized for the first time in 1922, when two groups began throwing flaming balls of fire at each other.
There are many legends behind the tradition; a popular one of them being that this tradition was created as a memory of the eruption of El Payon volcano in 1658. The tradition is considered safe as the people participating are well protected against the petrol-soaked balls of cloth and wire. In fact, the tradition has become somewhat of a party for the locals.
